Customer development

CONCEPT · LAST REVIEWED 2026-09 · SOURCED FROM 1 SESSION, APR 2026

Customer development is the disciplined sequence of conversations that turns a hypothesis into paying customers: exploratory interviews, focused interviews, paper-prototype feedback, MVP feedback, paid, referral. The founder behind the session, who took a sales-tech company from zero to $1M ARR in months, draws it as a single funnel.

Research and sales are the same conversation at different stages.

“These aren’t two different things. These are two ends of the same continuum.”

— Founder & revenue podcast host, 0→$1M ARR in months · session, Apr 2026

Two questions on every call: “On a scale of 1–10, how important is this problem to you?” and “How satisfied are you with how you’re solving it today?” You are hunting high importance, low satisfaction, with a payoff that takes as few logical hops as possible to reach money made, saved, or risk reduced. Then never let a conversation end without the next one scheduled; the stage-gate questions (“what would we need to build for you to use this full-time, pay full price, refer three peers?”) turn feedback into revenue and the referral gaps into the roadmap.

  • No booked next step.
  • Leading questions.
  • Long payoff chains.
  • Delegating the learning.
